GLP-1 friendly meal planning: eating well on a smaller appetite

GLP-1 medications shrink appetite fast. Here's how to plan meals that protect muscle, keep digestion comfortable, and make every smaller bite count.

By Josh Strauss, Mise Kitchen Team · Published · 7 min read

People on GLP-1 medications like semaglutide often report eating 20-30% fewer calories within weeks, because the drugs slow gastric emptying and blunt appetite. That's the point — but it changes the meal-planning math entirely. When you're eating noticeably less, every bite has to carry more protein, more fiber, and more nutrition, or you risk losing muscle along with fat and feeling unwell in the process. GLP-1 friendly meal planning is about density and comfort, not volume.

Protein first, always

When appetite is suppressed, protein is the nutrient most at risk of falling short, and inadequate protein during rapid weight loss accelerates muscle loss. The practical move is to eat protein first at each meal, while your limited appetite is still available, and to keep portions small but protein-dense. Many people do better with smaller, more frequent meals than three large ones.

Mind fiber, hydration, and fat

  • Fiber keeps digestion moving — important when the gut is already slowed — but ramp it up gradually to avoid discomfort.
  • Hydration is easy to neglect when you're not hungry; sip steadily through the day.
  • Very rich, greasy, or large meals can worsen nausea, so lean and moderate usually feels better.
  • Smaller portions, more often, beat big plates that overwhelm a reduced appetite.

Make small meals feel satisfying

A smaller meal still has to be appealing or you won't eat enough. Flavor and texture matter more than ever when quantity is down. Technique helps: a good sear adds depth without bulk, and a quick pan sauce turns a modest portion of chicken into something you actually look forward to. Eating well on a smaller appetite is partly a cooking problem, not just a nutrition one.

Plan for the appetite you have, not the one you used to

Old habits — big batch portions, three square meals — fight against how GLP-1s work. Mise's GLP-1 plans are built for the smaller, denser, lower-sodium, higher-fiber meals these medications call for, so you protect muscle and stay comfortable without turning every meal into a calculation. Set your protein floor and fiber target and the week adapts to them.

On a GLP-1, less food is doing more work. Plan so that every smaller bite is protein-forward, fiber-aware, and genuinely good to eat.
